The Security Of Having Security

This past week, a lackadaisical security guard in Newark Airport allowed an individual to enter the terminal via the exit lane, thus circumventing the security lines and causing virtual havoc in Terminal C. As a frequent traveler of that specific terminal, I am familiar with the layout of the terminal: the exit lane is a 12 foot or so aisle on the side of all the security machines, guarded only by a uniformed TSA officer, sitting in a chair usually gazing aimlessly into space as hundreds of passengers pass through. Their goal: make sure it’s a one-way aisle. Anyone going in the wrong direction is worse than a sole car going the wrong way on a crowded freeway. What happened? Basically, a huge breach-of-security mess. I was wondering: if you can’t re-enter the subway exit ramp in NYC because the turnstile only turns one way, and you can’t go back into the Enchanted Kingdom because the exit gates only turn one way, why is our national security based on one person sitting in a chair with no “one-way turnstiles?”

TSA is doing a full evaluation of their security measures. Recently, as we all know, a husband and wife infiltrated the White House security and not only attended the White House dinner, but actually shook hands with President Obama. The White House is re-evaluating their security measures. How about you…have you started evaluating YOUR security systems?

Personal and family security starts with the minute you wake up. Do you just let your dog out unsupervised, or are you in attendance? When you kids go to the bus stop, are they in your line of sight? Do you start your car in the driveway to warm up, leaving it running and unlocked? Are your windows and doors always locked? How often do you change your passwords? If you lose your phone and someone gets your contacts list, are you compromising security? Phone numbers? Social Security numbers? Ya’ gettin’ it yet?

Do you have a security system in your home that you only use when you remember? Since most home invasions happen at night, is this a time you forget to turn it on because you feel if you’re home it won’t happen? Do you have an alarm system in your home? Believe it or not, most systems installed are done AFTER the home has been invaded…kind of closing the barn door after the cow has wandered off…

Do yourself a favor- do a full evaluation of your personal security needs. You just may save some money…and heartache….
