Well I don’t know about anyone else but I sure have had enough of the winter season, although there is still quite a ways to go as far as the possibilities of snow. We have the whole month of March yet and can anyone remember a certain April many years ago when we had a huge blizzard that changed Easter plans? At the record setting pace that so many parts of the country are experiencing with snowfall it looks like anything could be possible this year.
I’ll be the first to admit that I just hate dealing with snow and ice from the standpoint of driving, no matter whether it relates to business or personal matters. I know I am not alone in those feelings and I often think about the folks that have no choice other than to drive irregardless of the weather conditions such as hospital personnel for one example. So when the latest nor’easter began on Thursday morning in our tri state New York area it didn’t take long to decide that it was going to be a work at home day. I was sure convinced by the weather forecasters that the snow that had begun was going to be serious and in fact overall bad conditions carried right into Friday.
So now the objective became making my time at home productive. Would that really be a problem? There were tax returns ready for preparation and client portfolio accounts that needed some trading attention. Booting up the computers in my home office I got my download updates for the tax software and went to my web based programs for securities management and back office support. Oh yeah, and I couldn’t forget to turn the television on to keep up to date with CNBC and Bloomberg on the cable channels.
The snow continued, but I found myself “buried” not by the storm, but the amount of work that I was able to accomplish at home. I couldn’t help but reflect on how years ago if there was going to be a “snow day” it basically meant a lost day of work. Clearly that is no longer the case if you don’t want it to be! I found myself working very efficiently over the course of what became a four day weekend. My wife and I even had some turkey one evening so I kidded that it was like a long Thanksgiving weekend in the winter!
So taking advantage of the technology resources at my disposal I was able to seriously catch up on work and use the time to my best advantage. Maybe it was due to the lack of disruptions that are often encountered in the office. Now I don’t want to offend my office colleagues implying that they create the disruptions, but there is something to be said about quiet time to concentrate and becoming more productive. Besides, I needed to get work done and make some money. After all my snow plow man wants to get paid!
