Flood Insurance – Can It Make It Stop Raining?

If you live anywhere the New York area, you know that March has been the wettest month on record. Yesterday I looked out into my backyard, which had ducks swimming in my lake…which I didn’t have before yesterday! Mature trees have fallen over from the waterlogged soil, streets flooded, vast erosion of private and public land, and an overall feeling of I’ve just had enough. Homeowners in flat, safe areas that never gave water damage a thought are dealing with inches or feet of water in their lower levels and garages. Thank goodness you have homeowners insurance…but are water damages… Continue reading

The New Healthcare Program: Demon or Delightful?

Heathcare reform waysI’m not one to get involved in conversation involving religion or politics: mostly because I believe everyone has their right to their opinion and their beliefs. Well, of course up to the  point that it doesn’t infringe on others rights. “Live and let live.” “To each their own.” ” What shall be, shall be.” Yada-yada-yada…

The new groundbreaking, revolutionary, stupendous, earth changing (insert your own description) healthcare program is the first major change to the healthcare system in the US for many decades… Continue reading

2010 – The Year Of Estate Tax Change

meeting with financial planner to discuss estate planning issuesCongress couldn’t decide – can you imagine that?

For the first time since 1915, the year 2010 brings us a reprieve from estate taxation at death, as Congress has been unable to determine how to deal with the escalating deduction. Going back to 2001, each American could leave $675,000 federally tax free, ramping up in 2009 to $3.5 million dollars, thanks to the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Act of 2001. Year 2010, formally referred to as the “Sunset Year” up… Continue reading

Special Needs Children And Special Needs Trusts

baby holding fathers handLife throws us curveballs- things we least expect, don’t plan for, or just don’t expect. One of the joys of life is that blessed event of having a child. As anyone who has had the pleasure, its commonplace to immediately upon birth count your child’s fingers and toes and breathe a sigh of relief when you get to twenty. I remember with great clarity the morning my daughter was born, and in recent years, the wonderful addition of my grandson to our family. It… Continue reading

Pre-Nups, Post-Nups, And Now D-Nups

Wedding Ring

The Beatles sang about “Love, Love, Love.” Tina Turner danced while extolling the question “What’s love got to do with it?” Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen crooned “Love is a crazy thing.” Throw the rice- write “just married” on the car with shaving cream…let’s face it- love is grand- until stuff happens.

Yes, love is grand- it’s just all the stuff that goes along with it that taints the water. We all go into a relationship with the idea that we will live and love happily ever after… Continue reading

Automotive Consumer (lack of) Confidence…Toyota’s got Company

Toyota Recall News

In a report from CBS news, it was discovered that approximately 100,000 Chevrolet Impalas being sold pre-owned across the country have a side air-bag listed on the original ticker of sale, but never had them installed.

It seems that Enterprise, a major car rental company in the US, purchased the cars for their fleets in recent years, and to save $145 on each car, cut a deal with GM to delete the bags and fill the space with a plastic insert. The car sticker continued to show… Continue reading

Technology Trumps the Snowstorm

Feb. 2010 NE Snow Storm

Well I don’t know about anyone else but I sure have had enough of the winter season, although there is still quite a ways to go as far as the possibilities of snow. We have the whole month of March yet and can anyone remember a certain April many years ago when we had a huge blizzard that changed Easter plans? At the record setting pace that so many parts of the country are experiencing with snowfall it looks like anything could be possible this year… Continue reading

Got A Big Tax Return? Do Not Spend It…Yet

tax return check

You’ve got it all planned…you get the return… you go on vacation… it’s all paid for…hold on- it may not all go as planned.

David Paterson, Governor of New York, has an unprecedented proposal- to delay tax returns for residents of New York State to assist in closing the states massive shortfalls. This strategy is pointed at helping the state from going broke before the end of the fiscal year; ending April 1st. Wait a Minute- does this sound familiar? Can you say BAILOUT? While… Continue reading
